Cripta Gaudí y Colònia Güell

Descripción Datos de contacto

When Eusebi Güell commissioned Antoni Gaudí to build the church of the Colonia Güell en 1898, he didn’t set any limits on the budget, on the structure’s design or on the date of its completion. In the ensuing years, Gaudí drew several preliminary sketches that culminated in a model of the church which he installed in his workshop, on the hill where the church itself was to be built. The construction of the building began in 1908. The ambitious project, however, which envisaged a church with two aisles topped by various side towers and a central dome rising 40 metres in height, would be left unfinished due to a shortage of funding. Even so, the crypt is a milestone in the work of Gaudí since it includes for the first time and in a unified way all his architectural innovations.
