A large part of the haute cuisine of Catalonia and the world at large lies within the triangle formed by Montseny, the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava.

Creativity, taste and quality come together in the food and wine culture of Girona. The local products from the sea and the mountains pair with the area’s Designation of Origin Empordà wines to surprise diners with their exquisitely matched tastes.

Chicken with langoustines and meatballs with cuttlefish are just two examples of dishes that combine contrasting ingredients to create a truly delicious experience. Indeed, the quality local products like Pyrenees veal, Empordà olive oil made from local olive varieties, the apples and cheeses of Girona, the onions of Figueres, Santa Pau white beans, L’Escala anchovies and other seafood make any meal here a veritable culinary ecstasy for the senses.

The world's best restaurants
Haute cuisine made its appearance in Girona at the hand of master chef Ferran Adrià, who popularized this area by turning his establishment, El Bulli, into the world’s best restaurant. Adrià closed it down at the height of its glory but the Roca brothers have taken his place at El Celler de Can Roca, now the most prestigious gourmet restaurant around, boasting 3 Michelin stars. It is a magical place in which to enjoy the surprising tastes and techniques that mark everything from its appetizers to the desserts made by the youngest of the three brothers, considered the world’s best pastry chef. All told, 13 restaurants in the regions of Girona hold a total of 17 Michelin stars thanks to their extraordinary culinary creativity and innovation.

D.O. Empordà wines
The wine route allows people to discover the different tastes, aromas, textures and colours of the white, red and rosé wines of the Empordà area. The winemaking tradition here goes back to ancient Roman times and there are now 330 winegrowers and 50 wineries with over 2,000 hectares of vineyards. 26 of these wineries are open to visits and here people can learn how the wines are made, see the vineyards and taste the excellent products of this Designation of Origin, a territory marked by its refreshing tramontana, its gentle Mediterranean climate and the unique quality of its soil.
