The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) is a modern culture centre housed in the ancient Casa de la Caritat. From 1792, this edifice forming part of the convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Montalegre, between the streets of Montalegre and Valdonzella, was the city's workhouse, which closed its doors in 1956, moving to the institution "Llars Mundet". The building then remained vacant. In 1980, to launch a process aimed to rehabilitate the old Raval Quarter, the Barcelona City Council commissioned a study of the historic buildings there to find a place to install a contemporary culture complex. Intended to be a key piece in the regeneration of this urban space, as indeed it was, CCCB was officially inaugurated on 25 February 1994.
