The Barcelona Botanic Garden contains plant species from the world's Mediterranean climate areas and other plants that can adapt to this climate, including some from East Asia and especially China and Japan. The garden's grounds are triangular in shape, allowing the orientation of plants to be changed with a minimum amount of soil movement as well as the creation of warm microclimates. The plants are arranged by phytogeographic units, that is to say, according to their geographical provenance and their ecological affinities. The garden also has nurseries and greenhouses.
