A symbol of pride for the Barcelonans, there’s no better way of understanding this church than walking around it, visiting it and experiencing it. Its two façades are just the opposite of each other: the Nativity façade, conceived and built by Antoni Gaudí, and the Passion façade, decorated by Josep Maria Subirachs many years after the death of Modernista architect. The Nativity façade, dedicated to Jesus’s birth, represents life: people, animals, flowers... Here, countless decorative elements greet the early morning sun. The Passion, on the other hand, represents Christ’s death, bidding farewell to the day with its somewhat gloomy austerity. But while the exterior fascinates everyone who looks upon its grandeur as it continues to rise in the city centre –the works will be completed in the year 2026–, the basilica’s interior leaves you speechless. It is particularly impressive at midday, when the sunlight bursts in through the stained glass windows, creating a sublime visual spectacle. And for a real treat, going up to the top of the towers to view the urban panorama is absolutely delightful.
