Set on top of a promontory, 114 m up, stands this jewel of Gothic architecture which was built in the early 14th century by order of Jaume II, king of Mallorca. The fortress has four towers facing the points of the compass, one of which is separated from the main body of the building. And inside one can appreciate what sets it apart from all other European castles of the period – its circular shape, a round courtyard which is the venue for classical music concerts in summer. Its walls bear witness to centuries of history. In the late 14th century, King Juan I of Aragon moved his court here, fleeing from the plague that devastated the Peninsula; during the Germanías wars, it served as a shelter for merchants and nobles who left the city. And it was used as a prison for figures like the astronomer and physicist Francesc Aragó. Today the main floor of the castle houses the Museum of History of the City.
