London and New York are not the only places to see outstanding musicals: Madrid has been hosting the world’s best productions for a number of years now.

The Lion King’ has long been the top musical in the Spanish capital: it premiered here in 2011 at the Teatro Lope de Vega and since then it has gone on to become the most successful musical ever staged in this country. Now running in its 8th season, over 4,000,000 spectators have seen it in its more than 3,000 performances. In fact, it’s a phenomenon that still plays to full houses day after day and it has become a must for everyone. However, other big productions can be seen here too.

Until December, the musical ‘El Médico’, based on Noah Gordon’s novel ‘The Physician’, presents an odyssey from the dark London of the 11th century to the exotic land of Persia, in which spectators see how the protagonist progresses after discovering his gift of curing shortly after he becomes an orphan. The musical of the film ‘Ghost’, following its premiere on Broadway and in London, has now reached Madrid. It tells the story of a man and woman in love whose happiness is cut short when the man is killed by a mugger. The need to save his girlfriend’s life makes him remain among the living as a ghost, and he does his best to warn her of the danger that she’s facing through his only means of communication: a daffy psychic.

Between January and April of 2020, the acclaimed musical ‘Flash Dance’, based on the hit film from 1983, is running in Madrid. Here we see how Alex Owens, an 18 year-old girl who’s a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night, dreams of attending a prestigious academy to become a professional dancer. Likewise, 7 years after its Madrid premiere, the musical about Queen, ‘We will rock you’, is returning to the city in 2020, having toured 19 countries around the world to the delight of over 16 million spectators.
